iCloud storage full: what to do
“iCloud Storage Full” is about your Apple account in the cloud, not your iPhone’s memory. Every Apple ID gets 5 GB free, and backups plus iCloud Photos fill that quickly. You have two options: free up space in iCloud — usually by removing old backups, large videos and files — or upgrade to an iCloud+ plan.
iCloud storage vs iPhone storage
- iPhone storage is the phone’s own memory: Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- iCloud storage is your space on Apple’s servers, shared by backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, Mail and Messages: Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
They are independent. Clearing cache on the phone does nothing for iCloud, and buying more iCloud storage does not add space to the phone. If your phone is full, see how to check iPhone storage.
What happens when iCloud is full
- iCloud Backup stops, so your iPhone is no longer backed up;
- new photos and videos stop uploading to iCloud Photos;
- iCloud Drive and app data stop syncing;
- your iCloud email address may stop receiving mail.
Nothing already in iCloud is deleted.
See what is using iCloud
Open Settings → [your name] → iCloud. The bar at the top shows the split by category. Tap Manage Account Storage (in some iOS versions, tap the bar or Storage) for the list sorted by size. Usually the leaders are Photos, Backups, iCloud Drive and Messages.
1. Delete old backups
The easiest win. In Manage Account Storage → Backups you may find backups of phones and iPads you no longer own. Tap an old one → Delete Backup.
For the current iPhone, tap its backup and look at the list of apps included. Turn off apps whose data is already in their own cloud (many messengers, streaming and social apps) — the backup gets smaller. Do not delete the current backup itself unless you have another one.
2. Clean up iCloud Photos
Photos is usually the largest category. Two things to know:
- With iCloud Photos on, deleting a photo on the iPhone deletes it everywhere — from iCloud and from all your devices. Before deleting anything you want to keep, copy it to a computer or another service: how to transfer photos from iPhone to PC.
- Deleted photos keep counting for 30 days while they sit in Recently Deleted. To free the space now, empty it: Recently Deleted on iPhone.
The fastest results come from videos, screen recordings and screenshots. Go through them one by one in Temfy: swipe left to mark for deletion, right to keep, and confirm once at the end. The same rules apply as for any deletion: with iCloud Photos on, the photos are removed everywhere.
Optimize iPhone Storage does not save iCloud space. It keeps smaller copies on the phone, while all originals stay in iCloud. And turning off iCloud Photos on the iPhone does not delete anything from iCloud.
3. Check iCloud Drive
Open the Files app → Browse → iCloud Drive. Sort by size (tap the … button or the view options) and look at old videos, archives, installers and folders like Desktop and Documents if your Mac syncs them. Deleted files go to Recently Deleted in Files for 30 days — empty it to free the space.
4. Messages and Mail
- Messages in iCloud stores every conversation with attachments. On the iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Messages → Review Large Attachments. Deleting there also removes them from iCloud.
- iCloud Mail: delete emails with large attachments and empty the Trash folder.
5. Apps you no longer use
In Manage Account Storage, some apps keep data in iCloud — old games, notes and document apps. Tap one to delete its data if you no longer need it. This cannot be undone.
When to upgrade to iCloud+
If after cleanup you still need more than 5 GB — and most people with iCloud Photos do — an iCloud+ plan is the practical choice. Plans come in several sizes (50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB and larger), and the 200 GB and larger tiers can be shared with your family through Family Sharing. Upgrade in Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Upgrade to iCloud+ or Change Storage Plan. Prices vary by country and are shown on that screen.
The alternative is to keep fewer photos in iCloud: move the archive to a computer or an external drive, and keep the library on the phone tidy. For more ideas on the phone side, see how to free up storage on iPhone.
FAQ
Why does iCloud say full when my iPhone has free space?
Because they are separate storages. iCloud is full when backups, photos and files in your Apple account exceed your plan.
If I delete my iCloud backup, will I lose photos?
With iCloud Photos on, photos are not part of the backup — they are stored separately in iCloud Photos. Without iCloud Photos, the backup does contain them, so make another copy before deleting it.
Free up space in a couple of minutes
Temfy shows your library one photo at a time: swipe left to delete, right to keep. Videos and screenshots have their own filters, and everything is processed on your phone.
