How to clean up your camera roll on iPhone

The fastest way to clean up a camera roll is not to scroll from the top and agonize over every photo. Start with the categories that are big and easy to judge — videos, screenshots, duplicates and bursts — then go through the rest in short sessions. Here is a plan that works with the built-in Photos app.

Before you start: two checks

Where to start: the order that frees the most space

1. Videos

A single minute of 4K video can take as much space as a few hundred photos. In Photos, open Media Types → Videos (in iOS 18 and later, scroll down to Collections; in iOS 17, it is in the Albums tab). Long clips of concerts, school plays and accidental pocket recordings go first. More tips in how to find large videos.

2. Screenshots and screen recordings

Media Types → Screenshots and Screen Recordings. Boarding passes from 2022, memes you already sent, a map you needed once — most of these are throwaway. See how to delete all screenshots.

3. Duplicates

Open Utilities → Duplicates. iOS groups exact copies (and photos that differ only in size or metadata); tap Merge to keep the best version. No such album means none were found or the library is still being indexed.

4. Bursts and near-identical shots

Media Types → Bursts holds burst sequences; open one, tap Select, keep your favorite frame and let iOS discard the rest. Series of similar shots taken one by one are not merged automatically — those you have to judge yourself. The duplicates guide covers both.

5. Photos saved from messaging apps

WhatsApp and other apps can save every received photo straight to your library: memes, group chat pictures, forwarded videos. Turn that off first — in WhatsApp it is Settings → Chats → Save to Photos — and then clean up what has piled up. Details in how to reduce WhatsApp storage.

6. Recently Deleted

Everything you delete moves to Utilities → Recently Deleted and keeps using storage for up to 30 days. When you are sure, open it (Face ID or passcode required) and tap Select → Delete All. After that, the photos cannot be recovered on the phone.

Built-in tricks that save time

The rest of the library: one photo at a time

After the quick wins, what is left is regular photos — and this is where most cleanups stall. Grid view with checkboxes is tiring: thumbnails are small, it is hard to see if a shot is blurry, and every decision takes several taps.

What works better is looking at one photo at a time, full-screen, and deciding immediately. That is exactly how Temfy works: swipe left to mark a photo for deletion, right to keep it, and confirm everything at once at the end. Videos, screenshots and favorites have their own filters, and the app counts how many megabytes you have freed. Photos are processed on the phone and never uploaded anywhere.

Keep it tidy: the small-batch habit

A big “weekend cleanup” rarely happens twice. A habit works better:

  1. Five minutes a few times a week. Sort the photos from the last few days while you still remember why you took them.
  2. Delete screenshots once a week. They are the fastest category to clear.
  3. Old years — in separate sessions. Photos from years ago take longer because they hold memories. Do one month or one trip at a time.
  4. When in doubt, keep it. Coming back to a photo later is easier than recovering a deleted one.

On Android? Menus differ (Samsung Gallery, Google Photos, Xiaomi Gallery), but the order is the same. See how to clean your gallery on Android.

FAQ

How do I organize photos on iPhone without deleting them?

Use albums for events and people, the heart for favorites, and Pinned Collections (iOS 18 and later) for what you open most. Search does much of the organizing for you — it finds people, places and objects without any tagging.

Will cleaning my camera roll free up iCloud storage too?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on: deleted photos are removed from iCloud after they leave Recently Deleted.

Free up space in a couple of minutes

Temfy shows your library one photo at a time: swipe left to delete, right to keep. Videos and screenshots have their own filters, and everything is processed on your phone.
