How to reduce WhatsApp storage on iPhone
Unlike Telegram, WhatsApp has no cloud to fall back on: messages, photos and videos live on your phone (plus your own backup). There is no “Clear Cache” button — instead, you delete media you no longer need. The tool for that is Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage.
Step 1. See what WhatsApp is storing
First, check the total: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → WhatsApp. “Documents & Data” is your chats and media. Then open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage. At the top you will see:
- Larger than 5 MB — videos and documents, usually the biggest win;
- Forwarded many times — viral videos and memes that went around group chats;
- below — chats sorted by size. Group chats with videos are almost always at the top.
Step 2. Delete large files and heavy chats
- Open Larger than 5 MB, tap Select, pick the files you do not need and tap the trash icon.
- Do the same with Forwarded many times — these are rarely worth keeping.
- Open the heaviest chat in the list. You can sort its files (newest, oldest, largest), select and delete. Messages stay; only the media goes.
For a chat you do not need at all, use Clear Chat in the chat’s info screen — it removes messages and media from the phone.
Before deleting: WhatsApp media you delete from the phone is gone unless it is in your backup or someone sends it again. Save precious videos to Photos or a computer first.
Step 3. Stop saving every photo to your camera roll
By default, WhatsApp on iPhone can save incoming photos and videos to your Photos library. That creates a second copy, and deleting it in WhatsApp does not delete it from Photos.
- Globally: Settings → Chats → Save to Photos — turn it off.
- Per chat: open the chat info → Save to Photos → Always / Never / Default. Handy for keeping family photos while ignoring noisy groups.
Already have hundreds of WhatsApp memes in your library? They are regular photos now, so clean them up in Photos — or swipe through them in Temfy, one photo at a time. More in how to clean up your camera roll.
Step 4. Limit media auto-download
Settings → Storage and Data → Media Auto-Download. For Photos, Audio, Videos and Documents, choose Wi-Fi or Never. Setting Videos to Never makes the biggest difference: they will download only when you tap them.
Step 5. Use disappearing messages for noisy chats
Disappearing messages delete themselves — media included — after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. Turn them on in a specific chat (chat info → Disappearing Messages) or for all new chats in Settings → Privacy → Default Message Timer. Good for work groups and chats where nothing needs to be kept.
Step 6. Keep the backup small
A WhatsApp backup takes space in iCloud, not on the phone, but a huge one can fill your iCloud plan. Go to Settings → Chats → Chat Backup and turn off Include Videos if you do not need them backed up. The backup gets smaller after the next run. If iCloud is already full, see iCloud storage full.
On Android
- Manage storage: Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage — same large and forwarded file lists and chats by size.
- Gallery copies: turn off Settings → Chats → Media visibility so new chat media does not appear in your gallery. Files already there are in the WhatsApp Images and WhatsApp Video folders.
- Auto-download: Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download.
- Backup: Settings → Chats → Chat backup. The backup goes to Google Drive and counts toward your Google account storage; you can exclude videos there too.
What not to do
- Do not delete and reinstall WhatsApp to “clear cache” unless you have a fresh backup — without one, your chats are gone.
- Offload App on iPhone does not help here: it removes the app but keeps all its data, which is the heavy part.
FAQ
Why is WhatsApp so big on my iPhone?
Because everything is stored locally: years of photos, videos, voice notes and documents from every chat. Group chats with videos are usually the main reason.
Does deleting media in WhatsApp delete it for others?
No. Deleting from Manage Storage removes your copy only. Other people in the chat keep theirs.
Free up space in a couple of minutes
Temfy shows your library one photo at a time: swipe left to delete, right to keep. Videos and screenshots have their own filters, and everything is processed on your phone.
