Can’t delete photos on iPhone: reasons and fixes
If the trash icon is missing or grayed out, the photos were most likely synced from a computer with Finder or iTunes — those can only be removed by syncing again. Other common causes are shared albums, iCloud sync problems and app permissions. Find your symptom below.
1. The photos were synced from a computer
Symptom: no trash icon, or a message that the photo cannot be deleted. The photos are in albums named like “From My Mac” or “From My PC”.
Photos copied to the iPhone through Finder (Mac) or iTunes / Apple Devices (Windows) are managed by the computer, not the phone. To remove them:
- Connect the iPhone to the computer you synced with.
- Mac: open Finder, select the iPhone in the sidebar, go to the Photos tab. Windows: open iTunes or the Apple Devices app → the iPhone → Photos.
- Uncheck the folders you no longer want, or turn off Sync Photos entirely.
- Click Apply or Sync. The photos disappear from the iPhone; the originals stay on the computer.
If you no longer have that computer, syncing from a new one with photo sync turned off removes the old synced photos — but anything else synced from the old computer (like music) is replaced too.
2. It is a shared album
In a Shared Album you can delete only photos you added yourself; the album owner can delete any photo. Photos in shared albums also do not count toward your iCloud storage, so deleting them will not free much space. To leave someone else’s album: open it → the people icon → Unsubscribe.
3. It is in the iCloud Shared Library
With iCloud Shared Library, a participant can delete items only if the library allows it, and deleting removes the photo for everyone in it. Check which library you are viewing (the library switcher at the top of Photos: Both Libraries / Personal / Shared) and the settings in Settings → Apps → Photos → Shared Library (on iOS 17 — Settings → Photos). If you are not allowed to delete, ask the library creator, or move a photo back to your Personal Library and delete it there.
4. Deleted photos come back
This is almost always iCloud sync. Possible reasons:
- Sync is paused or stuck. At the bottom of the library Photos shows the sync status (“Paused”, “Syncing…”). Connect to Wi-Fi and a charger and let it finish.
- Another device has a different library state. An iPad or Mac that was offline for a long time can bring things back. Let all devices sync.
- iCloud storage is full. Sync stops and the devices get out of step. See iCloud storage full.
- Signing out and back in. Sign out of iCloud only as a last resort and only after making sure the photos are safe in iCloud or on a computer.
5. A third-party app cannot delete
If a photo app or cleaner cannot delete photos, check its access in Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos. With Limited Access, the app sees and can change only the photos you picked. Switch it to Full Access. iOS also asks you to confirm each deletion — if you tap “Don’t Allow”, nothing is deleted.
6. The iPhone is managed or restricted
A child’s iPhone under Family Sharing, or a work phone managed by a company, can have restrictions on what can be changed. Check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions. If the device is supervised (a note appears at the top of Settings), ask whoever manages it.
7. Deleted, but the space did not come back
Deleted photos sit in Utilities → Recently Deleted for up to 30 days and still use space. Empty it with Select → Delete All. If storage still looks full, the reasons are covered in storage still full after deleting photos.
8. A glitch: restart and update
Sometimes Photos just hangs — especially when storage is nearly full. Try in order:
- Close Photos from the app switcher and open it again.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Free a little space (a few large videos) — iOS works poorly when storage is completely full.
- Install the latest update: Settings → General → Software Update.
Deleting a lot at once? Once deletion works again, sorting is faster than ticking boxes. Temfy shows photos one at a time — swipe left to delete, right to keep — and deletes everything you marked with one confirmation. For removing an entire library, see how to delete all photos from iPhone.
FAQ
Why is the trash icon grayed out in Photos?
Usually because the photo was synced from a computer via Finder or iTunes, or it belongs to a shared album you do not own. See sections 1 and 2.
Why can’t I delete photos from Recently Deleted?
The album is locked with Face ID or your passcode — unlock it first. If deletion still fails, restart the iPhone and try again.
